Located in the heart of Shelley Lake Park, Sertoma Arts Center is a fun, creative destination for all ages, offering classes and workshops in painting, drawing, photography, pottery, performing arts, printmaking, jewelry, fibers studio, fitness, and more, along with exhibitions, studio spaces, group support, and community outreach. Sertoma's outreach partners include the North Carolina Arts Council and Wake County Public School System.

Sertoma Arts Center is part of a learning community of 11 arts organizations that collaborate to advocate for and improve access to the arts for people with disabilities. This collective is funded in part by the City of Raleigh Arts Commission and the United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County.

Plan Your Visit

Sertoma Arts Center has resumed normal operating hours with a reduced capacity. To adhere to reduced capacity requirements, studio use will require a reservation. Programs will run as scheduled and building entrance priority will be given to students attending class and pre-registered studio users. For assistance or questions, call ahead at 919-996-2329.

Pottery Open Studio Hours

  • Reduced capacity hours in the pottery open studio will be held the first 2 hours of each day unless otherwise noted on the studio calendar and require a reservation. Reserve your spot online or by phone at 919-996-2329.
  • All other studio times do not require a reservation. Open studio times are listed on the studio calendar or call before visiting at 919-996-2329.

Studios

Sertoma Arts Center offers studio memberships to our three studios: painting, pottery, and jewelry. Raleigh residents and non-residents can purchase a studio card that will allow them to work independently when classes are not in session. Participants are eligible to purchase a studio card after they have completed a qualifying class.

In order to adhere to reduced capacity requirements, studio cardholders and students currently enrolled are required to make a reservation for studio use. For assistance or questions, call ahead at 919-996-2329.

Jewelry | Studio Features

  • Two-room work studio
  • Acetylene torch
  • Enameling kilns
  • Equipment and special classes for etching and niobium
  • Hydraulic press, roll mill, and community hand tools for jewelry making and stone setting

Patrons must complete and pass* a beginning jewelry class at Sertoma Arts Center to qualify for a studio card. Pullen jewelers must complete a studio orientation to qualify.

*Passing grade determined by the instructor.

Painting | Studio Features

  • Large open space filled with windows and natural light
  • Balcony access perfect for plein air painting
  • Tabletop and floor easels
  • Reference materials for in-house use
  • Models, stands, lighting and still-life props available

Patrons must complete any drawing or painting course at Sertoma Arts Center to qualify for a studio card.

Pottery | Studio Features

  • Spacious work studio with more than a dozen wheels
  • Separate work areas for glazing, hand-building, and wheel throwing
  • Slab roller and extruder
  • Regular firing of electric kilns, with Cone 6 oxidation electric firing the primary method. A Cone 10 gas kiln is fired approximately once a month. Works are fired in seven to 14 days
  • On-site store with a selection of tools and clay for registered students and studio cardholders. All clay must be purchased from Sertoma. Glazes must be approved.
  • Glaze and two firings are included in the price for studio cardholders and students

Patrons must complete and pass* a beginning hand-building or beginning wheel class at Sertoma Arts Center to qualify for a studio card. Two options for each beginning course are offered every session. Pullen studio members must complete a studio orientation to qualify (offered once per session).

*To pass your beginning class and qualify for a card, you must attend the first class and the glazing class (typically around the 5th week), and you cannot miss more than two classes.

Pottery Open Studio

Gallery Exhibition Program

Sertoma Arts Center Gallery Rental Space

Sertoma Arts Center showcases emerging artists living and/or working in and around Wake County, along with special themed exhibits such as the Sertoma Student/Instructor/Patron exhibit and Sertoma's co-sponsored artist group exhibits.

Gallery Spaces

  • Raleigh Room | The Raleigh Room gallery is our largest exhibit space, located in a multipurpose room on the main floor.
  • Hallway Space | The Hallway gallery is located on the main floor and runs through the center of the facility.
  • Display Cases | Glass display cases with four non-adjustable glass shelves are located on the main floor. The front desk display case offers adjustable shelves.

November/December Exhibit

Sertoma Arts Center's annual Student, Instructor, Patron Exhibit, on display until December 28, 2021, features artwork in all gallery spaces from various local artists who use our center as a creative space. The exhibit includes pottery, jewelry, fibers, paintings, drawings, mixed media collages, woven garments from SAORI Arts NYC, and a jewelry display in honor of Katherine Cherry.
